Our Motivation

Our everyday lives are more and more affected by satellite images. They are an integral part of the daily news as well as the weather forecast, and all it takes are a few clicks in the geo browser in order to let them change our views of the earth.

Environmental sciences and geosciences are important academic fields drawing upon satellite imagery for the most diverse kinds of analyses. Thus, remote sensing constitutes a key technology within our modern information society. This finds expression in a continuous development of new sensors as well as in an ever-increasing demand for qualified labour in the field of earth observation.

 

The increasing importance of satellite data is also reflected in the current curricula and in the scholastic standards for the school subject geography. As working with remote sensing data enhances various competences, the implementation of satellite images into school lessons is explicitly demanded in these documents.

About FIS

The project "Remote Sensing in Schools" aims at a more intensive use of remote sensing in school lessons.

 

For you, the teachers, the first steps into the subject should be as easy as possible.

Therefore, we ...

  • developed a new didactical concept.
  • conceptualised a comprehensive learning portal concerned with remote sensing.
  • developed innovative, interactive and digital learning modules intended to provide secondary school puplis with an understanding of a wide range of remote sensing techniques.
  • created interactive research and analysis tools linked to remote sensing.
  • devised background information such as didactical commentaries, guidelines for course and lesson planning etc. for an implementation of remote sensing in school lessons.
  • conceptualised learning materials for primary education.
  • developed a learning management system.

All of the learning materials developed in FIS are available for free via the FIS learning portal (www.fis.uni-bonn.de).

 

Pupils discover, teachers accompany

Active and self-reliant learning is central to the learning units. You, the teachers, should be able to accompany the pupils in a structured and organised fashion. Therefore, in addition to the innovative and interdisciplinary learning modules, the learning portal offers remote sensing research and analysis tools as well as a learning management system. Via the learning management system, you can manage your classes and observe and assess the individual learning progress of your pupils.

Why new learning materials?

Since there already is an ample supply of learning materials dealing with remote sensing in school lessons, one might ask: Why new learning materials?

 

In our opinion, many of these materials and software solutions developed so far are still too complex. Thus, you cannot use them without having to spend quite some time in order to work your way into them.

 

Therefore, it is our aim to adapt to the needs of school education and to provide the complex subject matter remote sensing with a useful didactical structure by means of new learning materials. As a result, our learning materials offer a quick and easy introduction to remote sensing and digital image processing for both teachers and pupils.

 

Our digital and interactive learning modules constitute an essential part of our learning materials. These learning modules introduce the pupils to the world of remote sensing by means of problems and questions specific to the curricula. Interactive tools for digital image analysis are central to the learning modules. They are linked with tasks, comprehensive and interactive background information and explanatory animations.

 

 Revision of software functionality

 

In order to keep both structure and handling of the learning modules as simple as possible, each learning module only provides the required function of image processing. For a convenient handling, these functions have been newly designed with regard to contents and technology.

 

The combination of operating instructions, illustrative background information and tools for digital image analysis results in a learning complex supporting the media competency and the methodological competency as well as the self-reliant work of the pupils in a sustainable manner.

 

Our learning materials do not require installation (except for the flash-plugin in the web browser) and are compatible with all major operating systems. For bilingual subject teaching, the learning modules are also available in English.
